My 2019 New Years Resolutions - How did I do?

Just like that, 2019 is coming to an end and it’s time to look back and see just how well I did at keeping my New Years Resolutions.

So how did I do?

1. Read More

I smashed this one. Seriously. I set myself the task of reading 10 books and I have actually read 17 with 2 more very nearly done.
At the beginning of the year I joined an online book club that got me reading books I would never have chosen and I also discovered the joy of listening to audio books when doing housework.
If you’re interested, here’s a list of the books I have read this year.

  1. This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay

  2. Scythe by Neal Shusterman

  3. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

  4. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

  5. Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

  6. Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman

  7. Nevernight byJay Kristoff

  8. Becoming by Michelle Obama

  9. If Only by Melanie Murphy

  10. Eve of Man by Giovanna and Tom Fletcher

  11. Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

  12. The Widow by Fiona Barton

  13. On The Front Line with the Women who Fight Back by Stacey Dooley

  14. Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

2. Train Jess (my dog)

Oh Jess, my little ASBO of a Spaniel.
We have actually cut the amount of training we do in half this year and next year I imagine any structured training will stop altogether.
Considering she is going to be 5 in 2020, we have done more training that most people do in their dog’s lifetime and in most ways she is an incredibly clever, well trained dog.
Does she make my life twice as stressful sometimes? Yes. Would I change her? Hell no.

3. Exercise more

Let’s all have a good old laugh as I tell you that unsurprisingly, just like 80% of the people who probably made this new years resolution, this is a big. fat. fail.
In years past I have loved the gym but this year I really struggled. I think with work getting busier, getting there became tougher.
I did do my usual Zumba classes and I joined the rest of the world in January trying a few new classes but with my gym buddy having a baby and a groin injury that took two months to heal, it definitely wasn’t as much as I planned.
I’m not mad I failed at this. A little disappointed I’m not sitting here stronger and healthier than last year maybe, but I’m not the type of person who will now punish themselves for not making it. The Celebrations I just ate prove that.

4. Work/Life balance

I must have been feeling really frazzled at the end of 2018 to write this one.
I can confirm that this year I believe I have found more of a balance between work and the rest of my life. I’m not going to lie, there have still been a lot of evenings and weekends spent working (especially on the run up to Christmas!) but as I am ending the year feeling not so hectic, I must have done something right.
The fact that I have read 19 books definitely goes part way to prove that. I also went on a girls holiday, a week away with the dog and a big family holiday.

So that’s it! Another year of resolutions done!

As I’ve mentioned before, although I may say at times that I have ‘failed’ at a resolution, I am in no way downhearted or hard on myself for not doing as well as I hoped.

I am the type of person who thrives off of having these little goals throughout the year. I enjoy the challenge and even when I don’t quite meet my goals, I have still enjoyed trying.

All of my resolutions are things that I really want for myself, rather than things that I feel I should aim for because someone else has made me feel that way.

Now I’m excited to get started with 2020!
