It absolutely blows my mind to say this, but today, Becki Williams Photography turns 10 years old!
10 years ago today I packed up my desk at my job as a Video Editor and entered the world of the self employed.
I remember getting home and decorating for the annual halloween party I put on for my niece (who is now 15…) while both being excited and terrified about what was to come.
It would have blown my little mind to know that 10 years later not only is my business still going, it’s currently in its most successful year.
To start with, back in 2014 I travelled to people’s houses for their photo shoots. This involved A LOT of car tetris trying to fit everything needed into the back of my little Ford KA. I found myself shooting in living rooms, dining areas, squeezed down the side of beds in bedrooms - anywhere I could fit and that had the best light.
After a while, travelling just wasn’t feasible anymore and I set up a makeshift studio in my dining room. I loved being able to invite people into my home where I had everything I needed - even though it did mean we didn’t own a dining room table for most of the time we lived in that house!
At this point 90% of my work was newborns with a few older babies and cake smashes and my business was growing year on year.
And then 2020 happened.
We put our house on the market in January 2020 (I know right, perfect timing…) and had the fun experience of trying to move throughout the various lockdowns.
I had to close my business for months at a time over a 2 year period while we juggled social distancing as well as house viewings and all the craziness that happened during that time. Luckily, while I had to close my doors to families, I managed to work as a photo editor for other photographers across the country.
It was a long and VERY stressful experience but in April 2021 we picked up the keys to our new house in Milton Keynes.
Did we ever think this journey would lead us to the land of roundabouts? Nope! But we’ve been here 3 1/2 years now and love it.
And one of the best things about the big move - I have my own studio! Two rooms, specifically designed for all the families that come through my door. I have room for all my props and accessories and am now photographing everything from Maternity, Newborn, Baby & Cake Smash photo shoots. I love my little space and am always getting positive feedback about the studio, which makes me incredibly happy. It’s the perfect combination of professional space but in a comfortable home setting.
But what’s even more mind blowing than me having my own studio, is the fact that the newborns I first photographed are currently choosing what secondary school they want to go to.
I have had families come back to me year after year - photographing second and third babies and watching their older siblings grow up.
Some I see every year for their Christmas photos, some every few years for updated family photos or new babies. Some I only meet once but I notice a little ‘like’ every now and then on an Instagram post and it means the world that they’re still supporting me.
Getting to know families and watching them grow is THE BIGGEST privilege of my job and I will never take it for granted.
So thank you to everyone for the last 10 years - let’s see where the next decade takes us, shall we!
